It is a global, grassroots movement with thousands of members that links the pleasure of food with a commitment to our community and the environment. It works to build links between producers and consumers.
The international Slow Food movement was born in Italy in 1986 years ago and has become a global network that works to help ensure good, clean and fair food for everyone. Our initiatives range from community activities organized by local groups to larger projects, campaigns and events coordinated by Slow Food’s national offices and international HQ. We are a non-profit member-supported association who work on local and global levels.
Who we are and what we do
Slow Food London is a group of committed volunteers. We campaign and we raise awareness about good, clean and fair food. People in the UK are increasingly aware of the social, economic and environmental impact of our daily food choices. We work to bring people together to create change through:
- the promotion of local and regional foods, saving endangered foods and defending gastronomic traditions through our biodiversity projects
- school and food education initiatives: teaching the pleasure of food and how to make good, clean and fair choices through food and taste education
- celebrations of the gastronomic traditions of Europe and Asia, artisanal cheese and fish, and meetings of our worldwide networks in our international events
- from animal welfare to land grabbing, addressing hot topics that we care about
- connecting people passionate about changing the food system through our international network
We respond to every DEFRA and EU consultation on food, fisheries and agriculture; working hard to ensure that traditional and sustainable agriculture and fishing are preserved.
“Eating is an agricultural act” Terra Madre is a network of food communities, groups of small-scale food producers committed to producing quality food in a responsible, sustainable way. There are more than 2,000 Terra Madre food communities around the world.
